< New Routes>

Pro Slot Mo 222 Iron Cross

This play starts off with a lead fake to the right.  Running a lead with the motion man would be great to set this play up.  The TE will force the DE wide with one good hit before running a drag.  He is fishing for a screen.  The TE is the first read for the QB.  If the playside LB is on a blitz the QB can dump it off.  However, only a double blitz or outside blitz should force the action.  The second read is on the Iron Cross Route.  Here the motion back runs an out after crossing with the slot from the backside.  The third read is the deep pass to the slot.  The slot turns his route into a go after running through the cross.  The forth read is to the TE ran a flag after the drag.  The last read is for a screen to the left with the tailback after his block on the DE. The last option will only be any good if both the Tail and the Tackle understand that they must perform their blocking duties first.

Of course you would not have to run all these routes at once.  This play gives the QB many options but they must be made quickly.  I would set this play up with Leads, Drags, and Screens.

Pro Slot Mo 75 Iron Cross

Here is a variant to the play.  The QB will take a five step drop while making his first read which is the LB blitz.  If either LB blitzes the QB will dump the ball to that side.  It is important that the players know that they are looking to alter their route for a blitz to their side.  We call this a glance.  They will glance at the LB to see if there is a blitz. The second read is the Tail on the swing route to the left.  The third read is on the Iron Cross which is ran by the TE and the fourth is to the Slot on the deep route.

These routes are great from the spread shotgun as well as basic sets.  They put a good deal of stress on the secondary.  There may to be too many reads for a young QB.  If so you could set the Iron Cross up by running individual routes to the Motion man, Tail, as well as drags, delay slants, and drags to the TE.  Once you have done this you could probably run the Iron Cross and only read the Cross itself.
