Over the years we have been forced to adapt our spread blocking scheme to some basic and not so basic defensive formations. If you have checked out any of the X-Streme Schemes book this blocking scheme will is an advancement on our old blocking scheme that has helped our line be more competitive. When you run the ball from the spread you give your skill position people more space to be athletic. A smaller, quicker line may have an advantage here because they are not required to blow larger defensive linemen off the line as often if at all. Below are some basic scheme adjustments that we have made.
#1) On outside sweeps (Monster or Nasty Cracks) we will pull our playside OT vs. a four front but not vs. a five front. This even takes some pressure off the running back or QB who now should have help with the CB. In the past we just attacked Corners that wanted to play us tight (face the front) with some sweep type play action and we still do but pulling an OL to the outside often gives our RB a chance to cut inside the Corner. The diagram below shows these rules.
